The Basics of Direct Mail Lists

Education Mailing List offer businesses the opportunity to build loyal customers, retain them and acquire new ones. But which mailing lists are the most effective? How can you find mailing lists? How do you find a mailing list?

Basics Direct Mailing List

Direct mail lists fall generally into three categories

  1. Lists owned by a company These are lists you have created yourself via direct mail or email. Many online businesses offer opt-in boxes on their websites so customers and visitors can provide their email addresses in exchange for news, whitepapers, and other goodies. You can also use records from previous purchases and leads to create your own "house list", as these lists are known. You can send direct mail to physical addresses, even if you don't have tacit permission. To avoid being branded spammer, opt-in methods are best for email marketing.
  2. Response list: Responselists are rented by list brokers, companies that specialize in mailing lists. This list can be based on past purchases or response behavior. It may include direct mail buyers, magazine subscribers, direct TV buyers, and direct mail. Companies often rent their lists to other companies in order to make money. This is because past purchases are a good indicator of future buying behavior. It is possible that someone will respond to a TV advertisement for jewelry. For an additional fee, list brokers may add extra selections such as 3-month buyers. This allows you target people who have purchased similar items in the past. Based on years of data across many industries, these people are most likely to respond again and that is why direct marketers look for such lists.
  3. Compiled list: These lists are compiled or created from public records. These lists were once based on DMV records, but are now mainly typed directly into computers from telephone books. Sometimes, public data like census data may be added to the list. This allows for sorting by income or other factors based on census data. Compilated lists are usually the most expensive, but they also have the lowest response rate to offers. You could rent a list of people who live in high-income zip codes to purchase jewelry via direct mail. However, you don't know if these people prefer shopping online, by phone, or via a catalog. The response list shows that such consumers have made similar purchases in the past and will do so again.

General list brokers offer a broad range of mailing lists. There are also specialist like Market Data Retrieval, which focuses on a specific industry. For example, education in the MDR. Ask your colleagues to recommend the top list brokers in their industry.

Renting Mailing lists

Once you have found a company that offers lists, search their database or call a broker to discuss your requirements. Tell us about your ideal client profile. Who are you targeting? List brokers can suggest a variety of lists and email or fax data cards to you. These cards give information about the list, such as who is renting it and whether it has been compiled or responded to, and the data selects that are available. Data selects can be used to narrow down prospects who are most likely to respond to your offer. You can choose to include your age, gender, recent shopping habits, and products purchased.

A list has a base price per thousand. List companies won't rent less than 10,000 records. To find the lowest amount you can spend on a list, multiply the cost per 1,000 records by 10. Additional charges may apply to different selections, or to generate the list directly from the computer.
